4 December 2025 – Modelling Experience in Continuous Casting – From Fundamentals to Problem Solving

Why modelling matters: Continuous casting of steel involves complex physical phenomena—fluid flow, heat transfer, solidification, and segregation—that directly impact product quality and process efficiency. Modelling is the key to understanding these mechanisms and turning theory into actionable solutions.

In this webinar, we’ll explore how fundamental principles evolve into problem solving and practical tools that solve real-world challenges in steelmaking. From academic research to industrial implementation, discover the journey from physics-based insights to plant-level applications.

📅 Date & Time: Dec 4th, 2.30-4.30 PM📍 Online Event
Speakers & Topics:
✅ Prof. Carlo Mapelli – Full Professor at Politecnico di Milano – Simulating billet casting and solidification: the role of EMS to prevent central segregation
✅ Arianna Gotti – Technical Manager in Transvalor – Coupling thermo-mechanics and solid shell formation: fundamental steel properties and physical approach

Michele De Santis – Senior Project Engineer at RINA- CSM – Steel intermixing: from reactors mixing fundamentals to on-line process tools

Q/A with audience: experiences, suggestions, feedback – chaired by Edoardo D’Amanzo (RINA- CSM)

1 July 2025 –  1st Dissemination Event at SIDENOR

A dissemination event focused on Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), took place at Sidenor Innovation Hub on July 1st, 2025, and was broadcasted in a hybrid format.

The speakers were:

  • Pavel Rámirez López –  Group Manager at SWERIM
  • Diana Mier Vasallo – Process Manager at Sidenor R&D
  • Raquel Arias Pérez – Process Researcher at Sidenor R&D

The agenda included the following sessions:

  • Session 1: CFD for Continuous Casting: This session explored how CFD modelling can be applied to industrial problem-solving, with a specific focus on the continuous casting process.
  • Session 2: Digital Twins in Continuous Casting: This session examined how digital twins support the modelling and resolution of industrial challenges in continuous casting
  • Session 3: Modelling Success Stories at Sidenor: The third and final session presented real-world examples from Sidenor, showcasing how applied research and numerical modelling have been used to solve complex industrial problems.

In addition, as this was the first event on training a preliminary educational session was held for students, aimed at providing foundational knowledge on continuous casting. This session, conducted in Spanish, included three modules:

  • Introduction to Continuous Casting
  • Continuous Casting at Sidenor
  • Introduction to Numerical Modelling
